CDA Court Massabielle celebrates 90 years

Court Massabielle 1134 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas celebrated its 90th anniversary Aug. 17 with a Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Morgan City followed by a banquet at St. Joseph Hall, also in Morgan City.
Massabielle was established as a result of the late Rev. Andrew Souby’s request to have a CDA court started. He was pastor of Sacred Heart from 1898-1938.
It was decided that the fest of St. Louis, Aug. 25, 1929, would be the date of the court’s inception.
Souby’s connection to Massabielle began when he witnessed a miracle at the grotto of the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in France. The grotto is named Massabielle.
He also followed through on his pledge to God to build a similar grotto which is housed next to the local Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Mistress of ceremonies for the banquet was Margaret Kreider. Regent Veronica Governale gave the welcome.
Sacred Heart pastor, the Rev. Joseph Henry Sebastian, gave the invocation and assistant pastor, the Rev. Evelio Buenaflor Jr., gave the blessing.
Several court members were recognized for service.
Barbara McCleary was acknowledged with a 40-year pin.
Certificates were awarded for years of service. Recipients were Betty Smith, 74 years; Elise Landry, 73; Marcelle Ordogne, 70; Monica Arnie, Marie “Tena” Grizzaffi, Dora Guillot and Beverly Hamer, 66; and Margaret Bergeron and Margaret Romaire, 64.
Perfect attendance recipients were Marian Jones, 31 years; Betty Rulf, 21; Betsy Grizzaffi, 16; Sundra Deshotel, 15; Governale, 8; Angela Mire, 7; and Kreider and Judy Blanco, 1. Flowers presented to the perfect attendance honorees were donated by Jones in memory of her sister, Joyce Russell.
A special district deputy pin was presented by Governale to CDA District Deputy Denise Ritchie who is a member of the court.
