Trio of CCHS Eagles net honorable mention recognition

A trio of Central Catholic Eagles earned honorable mention honors on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 1A All-State Baseball Team.
Senior catcher Bryce Grizzaffi, junior pitcher Luke Barbier and sophomore pitcher Caleb Menina each were honored.
Grizzaffi, a Southeastern Louisiana University signee, finished his senior season with a .373 batting average with 11 doubles, two home runs, 27 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.
“For two straight years I’ve felt like he’s been a first-team player and has gotten the short end of the stick for whatever reason, I’m really not sure,” Central Catholic Coach Tyler Jensen said. “I’ve said it all along and I’ll say it again, I feel like he’s as good as anybody behind the plate in the state. … He literally would shut teams' run games down. Like teams wouldn’t even run because of him, and when they would, they wouldn’t have a whole lot of success.”
Jensen said Grizzaffi also swung the bat nearly on par with anyone Jensen saw in Class 1A this year.
Despite what Jensen perceived as a slight to Grizzaffi, the Central Catholic coach said he was happy to see Grizzaffi get some recognition.
Barbier finished the season with an 8-3 record with a 2.78 ERA and 56 strikeouts.
“I feel like he was first-team worthy,” Jensen said. “Luke’s been our guy. He’s got three losses in his entire career, and I know that the award doesn’t go by their career, but when you look at the body of work he had this year, versus maybe some other guys who made first-team, I just felt like he was shorted as well. I hope that this will be something that will drive him going forward for the future and just go out and flat-out dominate everybody that we play next year, because that’s what I’m expecting from him.”
Menina had a 6-3 mark with a 2.34 ERA and 69 strikeouts.
“I was very excited for Caleb for making it, especially as a sophomore," Jensen said. "I know he was excited whenever I talked to him … about it. He’s an extremely hard worker. Really, really good kid. He has nowhere but to go up in the future.”
Jensen said he hopes the honor motivates Menina for next year to continue to work hard and to be a key player for them.
Clint Hargrave of Division IV state champion Ouachita Christian was named Class 1A’s Outstanding Player, while Greg Manuel of Class 1A state champion Oberlin was named Coach of the Year.
Ethan Lege of Vermilion Catholic, who competes in District 7-1A along with Central Catholic, was the only other selection from the district. He was a first-team utility selection.
