Tigers fall to Ellender 62-46
Ellender outscored Morgan City 32-12 in the second half to turn a four-point halftime deficit into a 62-46 victory in District 8-4A action in Morgan City Tuesday.
While Morgan City led 34-30 at halftime, Ellender outscored the home team 15-4 in the third period for a 45-38 lead heading into the fourth period. In the final period, Ellender held a 17-8 scoring advantage.
Early on, Ellender took a 19-11 lead after a quarter, but Morgan City 3-point helped the Tigers turn an eight-point first-quarter deficit into a four-point halftime lead.
Nylan Francis and Devonta Grogan each hit two three-pointers in the quarter. In the first half, Francis had five three-pointers. However, he was held scoreless in the final two periods.
Francis led Morgan City with 17 points, while Grogan also reached double figures with 15 points. Other Morgan City scorers were as follows: Tylan Bennet and Taaj Delaune with three each, and Elijah Singleton, Jaquan Gray, Tyland Boatman and Hilton Hebert each with two.
Morgan City (7-13 overall, 0-1 in district) will continue District 8-4A action Friday when it hosts Assumption at 7 p.m.
Panthers fall to
The Berwick Panthers fell on the road to Grand Isle Tuesday 42-28 in nondistrict action.
Grand Isle led 8-7 after a quarter, took a 22-14 lead into halftime and led 38-20 after three quarters.
“We settled for early 3’s and shot a poor percentage,” Berwick High Coach Toney Linn said. “We waited (until) it was too late to play defense as a team. We have to play as a team and not 5 individuals in order to be successful”
Blain Louviere led Berwick with 11 points, while George Boston scored six.
Berwick (4-10) will continue nondistrict play Friday when it travels to face St. Charles. Junior varsity action is set for a 5:30 p.m. start with varsity to follow.
Lady Panthers defeat Grand Isle
The Berwick Lady Panthers defeated Grand Isle 49-28 in nondistrict action on the road Tuesday.
Lay Bertrand led Berwick with 29 points, while Arianna Jones also reached double figures with 10 points. Other Berwick scorers were as follows: Bronwyn Colbert and Emily Lousteau, four points each; and Lily Eues, two.
Berwick (8-11) will return to action Friday when it hosts E.D. White in its District 9-3A opener at 5:30 p.m.
The Patterson Lumberjills fell to Southside High School in Youngsville 50-27 in nondistrict action Tuesday.
Patterson (8-10) will return to action Friday when it begins District 9-3A play at St. James.
Lady Tigers fall
The Morgan City Lady Tigers fell to Ellender 66-21 in Morgan City in District 8-4A action Tuesday.
Ellender, ranked No. 4 in the latest unofficial Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 4A power rankings, led 22-3 after a quarter, 42-10 at halftime and 61-16 after three periods of play.
Haylie Crappell led Morgan City with seven points. Other Morgan City scorers were Nikeisha Paddio, six; Nari Clark, five; Ta’Lea Smith, two; and Madelyn Poole, one.
Morgan City (8-13, 0-3), ranked No. 32 in the latest unofficial Class 4A power rankings, will continue District 8-4A action Friday when it hosts No. 3 Assumption in a 6 p.m. contest.
