Patterson will meet top-ranked St. James Thursday

The Patterson Lumberjacks will travel to take on St. James, Class 3A’s top-ranked squad, Friday in Vacherie.
The Lumberjacks (2-6, 0-3 in district) enter Friday night’s contest after dropping a heartbreaker to Donaldsonville, 30-27, a week ago at Patterson.
Patterson coach Don Jones said last week’s game was the best football game the Lumberjacks had played during his tenure at Patterson.
“I was so proud of the way the players played for four quarters, especially after the game the week before, which just became a disaster with special teams, but they came back, they fought and that proves to me there’s a lot of fight in this team and they never quit,” Jones said.
Meanwhile, St. James (8-0, 3-0) cruised past Berwick, 45-0, in Vacherie.
St. James is led this season on offense by quarterback Shamar Smith, running back Sean Lebeouf and receiver Shazz Preston.
“They’re an excellent football team, got a lot of speed,” Jones said. “The quarterback is their playmaker. Really hard to tackle, outstanding athlete. We’ve played physical football teams, but athletic wise, this will be the best team we’ve played.”
Smith has completed 68 of 133 passes for 992 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions, while he has rushed 114 times for 762 yards and nine touchdowns.
Preston has caught 28 passes for 451 yards and five touchdowns.
Patterson is led this season by running back Allen Langston, who has rushed 123 times for 604 yards with seven touchdowns.
Quarterback Tylon Walton is a dual threat as he has rushed 69 times for 289 yards and a touchdown and completed 27 of 83 passes for 392 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Kyler Paul has carries the football 42 times for 244 yards and three touchdowns.
Walton’s top receivers are Elijah Williams, Kai Schexnayder and Kylan Griffin. Williams has six receptions for 220 yards and three touchdowns, while Schexnayder has caught 14 passes for 105 yards and one touchdown. Griffin has three receptions for 102 yards.
