Lumberjacks to conclude season against Lutcher
Patterson High School will conclude its season Friday when it hosts Lutcher in District 9-3A action.
The game also will be the last for head coach Don Jones, who said Wednesday night he is retiring following the game.
Jones said he informed Patterson Principal Lane Larive of the decision approximately a month ago and told his team a few weeks ago.
Jones said when he took the Patterson job, he told Larive that he would “give him two years” as head coach, and Jones said he’s done his best in that time frame.
“I don’t have anything to prove to anybody,” Jones said. “My record speaks for itself, and I came, worked, did the best job that I could and loved these kids, loved the community, appreciate the opportunity.”
He noted that he has put his family “on the backburner for 48 years” while coaching.
“It’s time to let somebody come in and pick up where I left off,” Jones said. “I think we’ve made some progress, and I appreciate the opportunity, especially Coach Larive giving me the opportunity, and I’ve given everything that I’ve got to give.”
As for this week’s game, Lutcher (4-5 overall, 2-2 in District 9-3A) defeated Donaldsonville 25-18 a week ago.
On offense, Jones said Lutcher will “spread you out, and they run the zone and they run the bubble passes. Kind of similar to Berwick. Nothing real fancy.”
On defense, Jones said the Bulldogs “play a four-man front basically, and they back off with their receivers. They’re not going to press like St. James did.”
A week ago, Patterson (2-7, 0-4) fell to St. James, 65-0. St. James is ranked No. 1 in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 3A poll as well as the latest unofficial Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 3A power rankings.
The Lumberjacks are led by their ground game. Running back Allen Langston has carried the ball 138 times for 646 yards and seven touchdowns. Quarterback Tylon Walton has 76 carries for 279 yards and one touchdown, and running back Kyler Paul has 49 carries for 256 yards and three touchdowns.
In the passing game, Walton has completed 28 of 88 passes for 448 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Elijah Williams is his leading receiver with six receptions for 220 yards and three touchdowns, while Kai Schexnayder has 15 receptions for 161 yards and one touchdown. Kylan Griffin has added three receptions for 102 yards.
Friday’s game also will serve as Senior Night for Patterson.
“It’s an opportunity for the seniors to go out a winner, and we’ve been stressing all week that this your last opportunity to go out a winner,” Jones said.
As for Jones, the Louisiana High School Sports Hall of Fame inductee has won more than 200 games in his career.
In his initial season at Patterson a year ago, the Lumberjacks finished 1-9.
A message left for Larive Wednesday evening was not returned.
