Louisiana BASS Nation's High School State Championship tourney held locally
The Louisiana BASS Nation’s High School State Championship tournament was held Sunday locally.
The event, which was originally scheduled for Saturday but postponed due to thunderstorms, featured teams leaving from a boat launch in Amelia.
The duo of Michael Bonadona and Greg Diamond of Brusly High School won the championship as they caught five bass with a total weight of 14.43 pounds.
Clay Polk and Austin Sibley of Livingston Parish Bassmasters were second, while Michael Clement and Joshua Bergeron of Vandebilt Catholic were third. Polk and Sibley caught five fish with a total weight of 14.19, while Clement and Bergeron also reeled in five fish with a total weight of 14.15 pounds.
Ryan Welch of Vandebilt Catholic won the big bass award after hauling in a fish weighing 4.76 pounds.
Locally, the Morgan City team of Peyton Grizzaffi and Cullin Liner had the highest finish as they finished sixth. The duo reeled in five fish weighing 12.13 pounds.
Central Catholic’s Gunnar Theriot and Ben Harrington finished No. 23 with a five-fish total weighing 8.23 pounds, while Patterson High’s Hunter Pinho and Jake Childress finished No. 28 with five fish totaling a weight of 7.76 pounds.
In the No. 54 position, Morgan City’s Ethan Blanco and Jeremy Raney totaled five fish with a weight of 5.62 pounds, while Central Catholic’s Jordan Percle finished No. 57 with a four fish total weight 5.28 pounds.
Morgan City’s Austin Blair and Logan Metrejean finished No. 64 with a two-fish total weighing 3.02 pounds.
In the junior division, Central Catholic’s Collin Duval and James Fuhrer III finished No. 9 with a three-fish total weighing 4.75 pounds.
Eric Stelly and Camron Jones of Lafourche Jr. Bassmasters won the Junior event, while the teams of Caden Sellers and Jackson Rogers and Jack Varnado and Hunter Robertson, all of Junior Southwest Bassmasters — Denham Springs, finished second and third, respectively.
Stelly and Jones had a five-fish total weighing 11.63 pounds, while Sellers and Rogers had a five-fish total weighing 10.5 pounds. Varnado and Robertson caught five fishing weighing 8.32 total pounds.
Stelly and Jones won the Big Bass with a 4.01-pound fish.
As tournament champions and runner-up, Stelly and Jones and Sellers and Rogers each will advance to the national championship that will be held in Tennessee in August.
