Woman remains stable after shooting in Bayou Vista
BAYOU VISTA -- The 26-year-old woman who was shot Saturday in Bayou Vista was in stable condition as of this morning, according to a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s office press release.
She was taken to a hospital in New Orleans for treatment, the release stated.
On Saturday, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at 8:28 a.m. of a shooting at the Plantation Inn in Bayou Vista. Upon arrival, deputies located an unresponsive man inside one of the motel rooms. The woman, from Bayou L’Ourse, was taken to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance. The unresponsive man, identified as 36-year-old Vernon Singleton of Morgan City, was pronounced deceased by the St. Mary Parish coroner at the scene, the release stated.
Detectives determined that, while inside the motel room, Singleton produced a handgun and shot the woman in the face while she was lying next to him in the bed. Singleton then turned the gun on himself, inflicting a single fatal gunshot wound to the head. The woman was able to leave the room and seek help at the front desk of the motel, the release stated.
