Woman gets 40 years in car dragging case
LIVINGSTON (AP) — A Tickfaw woman has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for dragging a woman by a car through a Denham Springs parking lot.
The victim was loading groceries into her car on Nov. 5 when someone reached out from a passing vehicle and tried to pull her purse from her shoulder, the District Attorney’s Office said in a news release Wednesday.
The victim couldn’t get the purse off and had to run alongside the moving car. Chasidy Carpenter, 23, who was driving, sped up and began dragging the woman until the woman’s purse strap snapped.
A jury convicted Carpenter of second-degree robbery. State District Judge Ray Chutz sentenced her Monday. Carpenter must serve at least 85 percent of her sentence before she’s eligible for parole.
Carpenter and her co-defendant, Ricky Anthony Jr., have denied they were part of the robbery. They testified they were exchanging a broken refrigerator for drugs in Tickfaw at the time the robbery in Denham Springs occurred, the District Attorney’s Office said.
Anthony is set for a trial Oct. 21 on a charge of second-degree robbery.
