Woman arrested for leaving child in car while she played poker

MORGAN CITY, La. -- A Morgan City woman was arrested after leaving her 5-year-old in a parked car while she played video poker.

Trisha Danessa Grogan, 42, of La. 182 in Morgan City, was arrested at 10:39 p.m. Monday for child desertion.

Officers received a report of a small child being left unattended in a parked vehicle at a local lounge. Officers found the child inside the vehicle, which was not running, Morgan City Police Chief Travis Crouch said. Although the windows were down, the child was found sweating, he added.

Officers located the mother, Grogan, inside the lounge playing video poker. Further investigation revealed she had left the child unattended in the vehicle for about an hour.

Grogan was jailed with no bail set.

Morgan City Police Chief Travis Crouch also reported the following arrests:

—Joqusha Lashe Mingo, 27, of Bush Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 4:43 p.m. Sunday for simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling and possession of drug paraphernalia. Officers of the Morgan City Police Department responded to a complaint of a female entering a Grizzaffi Street home, taking money and leaving.

The residents confronted the female who then grabbed money from the top of a television and left. The residents said they did not know who the female was and provided police with a description. Officers located Mingo, who fit the description, a short time later. While speaking to Mingo, she was seen trying to conceal a glass pipe commonly used to smoke illegal narcotics, Crouch said. Witnesses to the theft were able to identify Mingo. She remains jailed with no bail set.

—Paul Pierce, 29, of Third Street in Morgan City was arrested at 9:02 a.m. Monday for resisting an officer, warrant-speeding, warrant-failure to appear for arraignment, warrants for St. Mary for possession of drug paraphernalia, abuse of toxic vapors and unlawful use of a driver’s license.

Officers received a call reporting two suspicious men in the area of Hilda Street. They were located at a residence located on Maple Street. One of them, later identified as Pierce, provided officers with false information regarding his identity. Upon further investigation, officers learned Pierce was a wanted person with the City Court of Morgan City and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Department. He was booked into the Morgan City Jail then transferred to the Law Enforcement Center in Centerville.

—Austin Stevens, 18, of Schriever, was arrested at 12:58 a.m. today for reckless operation of a moving vehicle and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

—Raven Mayon, 17, of Lakewood Drive in Morgan City, was arrested at 12:58 a.m. today for possession of schedule I controlled dangerous substance (synthetic marijuana) and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Patrolling officers saw a vehicle driving in a reckless manner near the intersection of Sixth and Hickory streets. During the traffic stop, officers found two juveniles, ages 15 and 16, as well as suspected synthetic marijuana inside the vehicle. Both were transported to the Morgan City Police Department and jailed.

—Michael Hickman, 27, of Gen. Hodges Street in Morgan City was arrested at 10:59 p.m. Monday on a warrant for failure to appear for disturbing the peace by fighting. Hickman was located at his residence. He was booked and later released on a cash bond.

—Shade Michael Suire, 21, of Houma, was arrested at 10:25 a.m. Friday for contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and on a warrant for window tint violation. Officers investigating a complaint of a runaway juvenile from the Patterson area made contact with Suire at Lake End Park in Morgan City after receiving information that the juvenile may be in his company. Suire initially attempted to conceal the runaway 15-year-old from police. Suire was released after paying $5,236 bail.

—Euline B. Vanwie, 73, of Susan Drive in Morgan City, was arrested at 2:45 a.m. Saturday for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, speeding 65/30, two tail lamps required and expired driver’s license.

Vanwie was stopped in a speeding vehicle at Clothilde Street and Victor II Blvd. According to officers, Vanwie was not able to produce a valid Louisiana driver’s license and appeared intoxicated. She failed a field sobriety test and scored a .146 grams-percent on the Intoxilyzer. She was jailed with no bail set.

—Darren Thomas Hemphill, 34, of Morgan City, was arrested at 4:32 a.m. Saturday for disturbing the peace intoxicated. Officers investigating a complaint of an intoxicated person in the area of Front and Bowman streets located Hemphill who was found to be in an intoxicated condition. Hemphill was jailed with no bail set.

—Kirkland Dwayne Craft, 22, of Railroad Avenue in Morgan City, was arrested at 2 p.m. Saturday on warrants for contempt of court and simple battery. Craft, who already was jailed in Morgan City, was discovered to have outstanding warrants. He was re-booked and remains jailed.

—Jude Michael Resignola, 17, of Lesley Drive in Morgan City, was arrested at 5:46 p.m. Saturday for possession of marijuana. Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries agents patrolling the Lake Palourde area detained a driver of a personal watercraft for operating a jet ski in a reckless manner. Agents discovered that the driver was in possession of suspected marijuana. Resignola was arrested and transported to the Morgan City Jail where he was jailed with no bail.
