Vermilion Catholic upsets West St. John for Class 1A title

MONROE — Vermillion Catholic’s Kaylen Collins hit a game-winning lay-up with six seconds left as the No. 2 Lady Eagles upset top-ranked West St. John in the Louisiana Girls’ 1A State Championship Game Thursday at Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe.
Prior to Collins’ game-winning shot, Vermillion Catholic had gone scoreless from the field for 7:25 but had hit 15 consecutive points from the free-throw line in that time span.
Vermillion Catholic (28-6) overcame 25 turnovers and was 0-for-7 from beyond the arc but held the Lady Rams (29-2) without a field goal during the final 1:56.
The Lady Eagles were led by Katie Frith’s 25 points, while Ashailee Brailey scored 10.
West St. John was led by Jalyn Gordon’s 30 points, 18 of which came off 3-point shots. Jajuan Nicholas added 10 points.
Vermilion Catholic competed in District 8-1A with Central Catholic this season.
While Central Catholic defeated Vermilion Catholic twice in the regular season, Central Catholic fell to West St. John in the state semifinals a week ago.
Country Day beats Arcadia for 1A crown
Metairie Park Country Day rallied from a 20-point, second-half deficit and held Arcadia scoreless in overtime to win the Louisiana Boys’ 1A State Championship with a 60-54 win Thursday in Monroe.
Metairie Park Country Day (22-10) trailed 41-21 with 2:42 remaining in the third before going on a rally that included a 7-1 run to end regulation.
Arcadia (21-9) didn’t score a field goal in the final 10:20 of play.
Michael Corchiani led the Cajuns with 15 points, all of which came in the second half and overtime. Scott Plaisance added 14 points.
Arcadia’s Eric Brown and Danquarian Fields each had 17 points, while Antwine Baker was 6-for-6 from the field for 16 points but did not attempt a shot in the second half or overtime.
Pratt leads Carroll past Farmerville 68-64
Thanks to 15 points by senior center Robert Pratt, the Carroll Bulldogs defeated the Farmerville Farmers 68-64 Thursday night in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s Class 3A Boy’s State Championship Game.
Trailing for a majority of the game and by as many as 13 points, Carroll (26-6) finally would take the lead with 2:51 to go on Devonta Johnson’s basket, and James Donahue followed with a bucket to make it a 60-56 lead with 2:20 remaining in the game.
Opening the game on an 11-2 run, Farmerville (25-7) would lead for most of the game behind a stifling defense that led to several fast-break opportunities throughout the first three quarters.
DeAndre Elliott led the Farmers with 17 points and Dontario McNeal scored 13 in the loss.
Senior guard JaCarre Crockett had 14 points for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs also won the championship in 2011.
Rayville routs Baker for 3A girls’ crown
Behind 17 points apiece from seniors Thomasina Minor and Victoria Wilson, the Rayville Lady Hornets defeated the Baker Lady Buffs 71-38 in the LHSAA Class 3A State Championship Game Thursday night in Monroe.
Arielle Richardson also had 11 points for Rayville (26-5).
Baker (25-6) was led by Anitra Whitifield, who finished with 16 points, and Eugenea James added 10 points for the Lady Buffs.
Capturing the school’s first state championship in girls basketball, the Lady Hornets trailed for only the first minute of the game before going on a 15-5 run to close out the quarter. Rayville’s lead grew for the duration of the game, ballooning to a 48-18 advantage after the Lady Hornets outscored the Lady Buffs 20-4 in the third quarter.
The lead reached 38 points in the final quarter before the partisan home crowd.
