Troopers investigating fatal crash in St. Mary Parish
ST. MARY PARISH- This morning, troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a two-vehicle fatal crash on U.S. 90 at Southeast Boulevard in Bayou Vista that claimed the life of a New Iberia woman.
According to investigating troopers, at 12:55 a.m., 22-year-old Bradley Jones of Colfax was driving a 2012 Dodge Ram east on U.S. 90 approaching Southeast Boulevard. A 2004 Honda Accord, driven by 22-year-old Brandon Smith of New Iberia, was stopped a red light on U.S. 90 east at Southeast Boulevard. Jones failed to stop and struck Smith’s vehicle from the rear, the report stated.
Jones was restrained and sustained no injuries. Smith and the three other occupants of his vehicle were restrained. Smith, 27-year-old William Walker of New Iberia and 47-year-old Willamae Collins of New Iberia sustained moderate injuries and were transported to a local hospital.
The fourth occupant, 44-year-old Laura Walker of New Iberia, died as a result of her injuries at the scene. She was pronounced dead by the St. Mary Parish coroner.
It is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash; however, toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers remind drivers and passengers, that Louisiana Law requires all occupants of motor vehicles to be properly restrained. While wearing a seatbelt will not save you in every crash, it will greatly reduce the risk of injuries in most crashes.
