Toys for Tots hands out more than 1,200 toys in St. Mary Parish
MORGAN CITY, La. — More than 1,200 St. Mary Parish children will have a merrier Christmas thanks to the Marine Corps League Toys for Tots.
Parents received their toy donations Saturday morning at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4222 in Morgan City. Each child receives three toys: one worth about $30, another worth $10 to $15 and a stocking stuffer. In lieu of the three toys, parents can opt for a bicycle on a first-come, first-served basis, according to local coordinator Bill Goessl.
In total, 3,342 toys worth about $50,000 were given away.
Those came from various sources including 1,189 that were collected from various sources, an additional 689 collected stocking stuffers, 1,367 toys purchased through donations, 354 purchased stocking stuffers and 635 toys donated by the Toys for Tots foundation, Goessl said. In addition, 32 bikes were given away, thanks in large part to a $1,500 donation by the Krewe of Adonis.
There were 526 children from the Morgan City area and 688 in the Franklin area who received toys this year, an increase over 2011 in St. Mary.
Additionally, the Toys for Tots St. Mary Parish Detachment delivers toys to children at Chez Hope, Claire House and to a psychiatrist’s office in Houma. The doctor works with troubled children, and the secretary lives in Morgan City, Goessl said.
Also, a church in Gonzales contacted Goessl saying they had trouble collecting enough toys to distribute, so some toys will go there as well.
Annually, Assumption Parish also gets toys delivered as Santa makes his rounds, Goessl said.
“We take care of our parish first, then we take care of the surrounding parishes too,” he said.
