Tour du Teche registration is under way

By: Staff Reports
The deadline to register for Tour du Teche II is Sept. 16.

TDT II is not until Oct. 7-9 and it might be unprecedented to cut off registration three weeks before a canoe race, but this is an unprecedented event.

C’est pas juste une course! It’s not just a race.

Unlike last year, which was a straight-through, round-the-clock ultra marathon like the Texas Water Safari, TDT II is a three-day staged race with finish lines in St. Martinville, Franklin and Berwick.

In between will be parties showcasing the wonderful hospitality of the Teche Country.

Entry fees include breakfasts and suppers, and the logistics of supplying food is one of the reasons for closing registration with enough time to order supplies and plan the meals.

A surprising aspect of the first Tour du Teche for both the racers and the organizers was how much spectator interest it drew.

While registration by Sept. 16 is a must, there is a back-out date of Sept. 26, providing a 10-day window of opportunity to get most of your money back.

Entry fees cover the costs of putting on the races and vary according to the number of meals provided.

The fee for the 133-mile Tour du Teche, from Port Barre to Berwick in three days and four parties, including eight meals, is $150 per paddler. Anyone who drops out by close of business on Sept. 26 will get a refund of $130 and a TDT II T-shirt.

There will be five other races occurring alongside the Tour du Teche. While a good deal shorter and only one day in duration, each is a marathon in its own right.

On Oct. 7, is the Crawfish, 34 miles from Port Barre to Breaux Bridge, and the Acadian, 48 miles from Port Barre to St. Martinville.

Oct. 8 is the Hot Sauce, 25 miles from St. Martinville to New Iberia, and the Sugar, 60 miles from St. Martinville to Franklin.

The Oil & Gas is 25 miles from Franklin to Berwick.

The fee to enter either the Crawfish or the Hot Sauce is $100 per paddler. It includes two meals, the evening before the race and the morning of. Dropping out by Sept. 26 will mean a refund of $80 and a T-shirt.

The Acadian, Sugar and Oil & Gas cost $110 per paddler. Three meals are supplied, including supper at the finish line. So the refund would be $90 and a T-shirt.

Registrations are only valid once Community Foundation of Acadiana receives the fees, which, again, must be in by Sept. 16. After a valid registration is received, it is listed on the TDT web site,
