Tour du Teche deadline for local, whole race approaches

Friday, Sept. 16, at 5 p.m. is the deadline to sign up for the both the the second Tour du Teche paddle race and the Oil & Gas marathon for canoes, kayaks and pirogues.

The 27-mile race starts in downtown Franklin at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9. The finish line is the iconic red lighthouse in the city park on the Atchafalaya River in Berwick.

This is a tough, flat-water race with portages at the Wax Lake Outlet floodgates and the Berwick Locks.

Sponsorships are open for the five classes of paddle craft in the race: canoes, kayaks, pedal drive boats, pirogues and the unlimited class of pro racers.

This special West St. Mary Parish event will be held concurrently with the third leg of Tour du Teche II, an Oct. 8-10 staged race down the entire length of Bayou Teche, from Port Barre in St. Landry Parish, through St. Martin and Iberia parishes, a total of 135 miles. TDT II is sponsored by Teche Federal Bank, Chevron and Teche News. Individual stages are sponsored by Cypress Bayou Casino and Pellerin Funeral Homes.

Classes for the O&G are:

—Canoe – Solo or tandem. Single blade paddles only. No rudder.

—Kayak – Solo or tandem. Double blade paddles only.

—Pedal Drive – Solo or tandem. May be paddled and/or pedaled.

—Pirogue – Solo or tandem. Single blade paddles only. Must be flat bottomed with hard chines.

—Unlimited – Anything that doesn’t fit into the other classes, like more than two paddlers, canoes with rudders, single or double bladed paddles.

The registration fee is $110 per paddler. It includes Saturday dinner in Franklin, Sunday breakfast in Franklin, Sunday lunch in Berwick, T-shirt and cap.

Prizes will be whatever local businesses and community organizations want to put up.
