Tigers hit the practice field

Staff Report

BATON ROUGE — LSU went through its first day of preseason camp Monday as the Tigers held a pair of split-squad workouts at the Charles McClendon Practice Facility.

The sessions, which had the Tigers in shorts, jerseys and helmets, featured the veterans and selected newcomers practicing in the morning followed by the rookies, along with other squad members, working out in the afternoon.

“It is the best way to teach,” football head coach Les Miles said of having some of the newcomers work out during the morning session with the veterans. “You take the first team and put some freshmen behind it, and you rotate it though. While the freshmen are sitting there watching, they see a varsity guy who knows what to do go through the rep. So it is the best team period for that youngster.

“We are taking some of the really talented young guys and putting them behind the starters, and taking the second team into the afternoon session and surrounding them with other guys. It is specific by each position, but I think it is a great way to teach. There are a lot of reps for everybody.”

The Tigers will continue to hold split-squad practices through Thursday with Friday serving as the first full squad workout.
