Three wrecks shut down U.S. 90 bridge (updated)

MORGAN CITY, La. — Three separate crashes occurred this morning involving six vehicles in the eastbound lanes of the U.S. 90 Bridge. The wrecks caused the bridge to be shut down for about 30 minutes.

The initial wreck happened around 6 a.m. when a 2002 Lexus hydroplaned and struck the guard rail of the bridge, and a 2012 Kia struck the first vehicle, Morgan City Police Chief Travis Crouch said.

Minor injuries were reported from the crash, and both drivers injured were transported to Teche Regional Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance Service. The driver of the 2002 Lexus, Travis Gilmore, 21, of Morgan City, was cited for careless operation with an accident.

The driver of the 2012 Kia, Courtney Pierce, 25, of Patterson, was cited for following too closely.

Due to traffic congestion, there were two more minor accidents, Crouch said. Both of those accidents involved two vehicles each and no injuries were reported.

Full traffic flow was restored shortly after 7 a.m., Crouch said.
