Tank fire in St. Martin Parish

A lightning strike is suspected as the cause of a tank catching fire Sunday morning, according to Louisiana State Police spokesman Tfc. Stephen Hammons who said there were no injuries and no evacuations ordered. The tank is located about four miles west of La. 70 in the Atchafalaya Basin in the area known as the West Lake Verret Field, according to St Mary Office of Emergency Preparedness director Duval Arthur. The 911 call regarding the fire was taken by St. Martin Parish officials and the incident was transferred to the State Police Hazardous Materials. The tank was storing crude light oil and the incident remains under investigation, Hammons said.
