Stewart picks off a pass in Houston's win Saturday

HOUSTON — Former Patterson High School standout Trevon Stewart capped off a monster freshman season with eight tackles, all assists, a pass breakup and an interception return for 53 yards in Houston’s 40-17 win against Tulane in both teams’ season finale.

Stewart finished his true freshman year tied for second on the Cougars’ squad with 126 total tackles (52 solo and 74 assists) as well as 3½ tackles for loss of 13 yards, a sack, an interception, seven pass breakups and a quarterback hurry.

According to the latest NCAA statistics, Stewart is ranked 12th nationally at 10½ tackles per game, the highest among freshmen in Football Bowl Subdivision (Division 1) and second highest among Football Bowl Subdivision defensive backs behind Marshall’s Dominick LeGrande, a senior who is ranked eighth at 11 tackles per game.

Behind Stewart, the next highest freshmen on the list is Temple linebacker Tyler Matakevich, who is ranked 42nd at 9.18 tackles per game.

In Saturday’s win, Houston’s Ryan Jackson rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns and Crawford Jones threw for 368 yards and two more scores as Houston closed 70-year-old Robertson Stadium.

Jones hooked up with Ronnie Williams for touchdowns of 22 and 9 yards in the first quarter, and Jackson scored on a 72-yard run in the third quarter and a 9-yarder in the fourth for the Cougars (5-7, 4-4 Conference USA). Matt Hogan added four field goals.

Ryan Griffin threw for 346 yards, including touchdowns to Xavier Rush and Wilson Van Hooser, for the Green Wave (2-10, 2-6) but also had four interceptions. Tulane had six turnovers in all.

Houston finished 72-44-1 all-time at Robertson. The Cougars will play their 2013 home games at a to-be-determined site before moving into a new stadium, to be built where Robertson is now, in 2014.
