St. Mary Parish teachers receive performance-based payouts

CENTERVILLE, La. — As St. Mary Parish enters its second year in the Teacher and Student Advancement Program, teachers at two of the three participating schools are receiving performance-based payouts.

Teachers at Franklin Junior High School and B. Edward Boudreaux will receive value-added growth performance-based payouts that range between zero to over $7,000 — with the average payout in the $1,700 to $1,800 range — for the 2011-12 school year, Donald Aguillard, St. Mary superintendent said.

Franklin Junior High School posted a school performance gain of 2.5 points and B. Edward Boudreaux Middle School gained 13.2 points, according to Aguillard.

TAP is funded through the Teacher Incentive Fund grant awarded to the Louisiana Department of Education, of which St. Mary is one of seven partner districts.

Franklin Junior High School and B. Edward Boudreaux Middle School are in their second year with Julia B. Maitland as a first-year school in TAP implementation.

TAP aims to support and retain effective teachers. Teacher impact on student achievement is recognized and rewarded through career advancement within the school, Aguillard explained.

Master and mentor teachers present field-tested instructional strategies during common teacher planning time, he stated in a news release.

TAP teachers receive differentiated compensation. Differentiation is shown in two ways. Teacher stipends for the added job duties of the master and mentor teachers are given. Secondly, compensation is provided as incentive stipends for student academic growth.

“The first-year TAP gains at B.E. Boudreaux Middle School and Franklin Junior High School provide real promise that improvements in teacher effectiveness will result in heightened student achievement gains,” Aguillard said.
