St. Mary Parish School Board to consider Bourgeois honor
CENTERVILLE, La. -- School classes may be on summer recess but the St. Mary Parish School Board meeting Thursday afternoon is loaded with agenda items for consideration, among them is the request to recognize and honor a long-time educator and former Berwick Junior High School principal.
Agenda items call for the board to consider adopting a resolution supporting naming of a circle drive at Berwick Junior High School after former principal Thomas Bourgeois. He has been principal there since 2002 and will be on extended medical leave the next school year. Teresa Bagwell is the acting principal and will address the board seeking permission to name the drive after Bourgeois, who she said has been in education for 32 years.
If the board approves the request, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Berwick Junior High on Friday morning, according to Bagwell.
The agenda calls for the board to vote on approving the purchase of property located at 1119 Second St. in Patterson in the amount of $200,000 contingent on a bond passage in an October election.
Two items are scheduled to be considered in executive session. The board is set to review Superintendent Donald Aguillard’s cumulative performance evaluation, and receive an update on the court case pitting the school board against Dune Energy.
Outside of executive session, the board will be asked to allow Aguillard to employ up to five additional instructional/support personnel to fill unanticipated staffing needs in the 2013-14 school year. This covers teachers, paraprofessionals, nurses and special services personnel.
The board will be looking to advertise to fill positions at three high schools; secretaries at Berwick and West St. Mary and custodian III at Franklin. The filling of four appointments of non-instructional spots this month will be announced.
The awarding of bids for playground equipment for Bayou Vista and J.B. Maitland Elementary schools will be announced as well as the milk bid for the food service in the school system.
Agenda items include:
—Request from St. Mary Council on Aging regarding property at 300 G Iberia St.
—Lease of Cane Road property by Centerville High.
—Approve The Daily Review printing board newsletter for 2013-14.
—Authorize legal counsel regarding Patterson Junior High construction project.
