St. Mary AARP holds December meeting
Nearly 400 St. Mary AARP members attended the Dec. 3 meeting held at the St. Mary Senior Citizens Center in Morgan City.
Prior to the meeting, a mini health fair was held with Teche Regional Medical Center staff doing health checks for blood pressure, diabetes and more. Meanwhile, members danced to music by Hubert Francis, Charles Fryer and Sterling Fryou. Then every bingo card was put to use as members played bingo.
St. Mary AARP President Paul Vella presided over the meeting. Guest speakers were Teche Regional’s newest doctors, Dr. Nsikan St. Martin, OB/GYN with Advanced Women’s Health; and Dr. Mistie Charlemagne an internal specialist with the office Walter Daniels, M.D. and Sharon R. Bass, M.D. Also speaking were Teche Regional’s Marketing Director Sabrina Roy and CEO Butch Frazier. Members and guests were treated to a meal of roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, salad and bread courtesy of meal sponsor Teche Regional.
The hospital also co-sponsored the St. Mary AARP Christmas Baskets that are given to members age 80 and older. A total of 307 baskets will be assembled and delivered on Dec. 13. Other basket sponsors are Lorraine Brownell, Sheriff Mark Hebert, Lee Dragna, Maison Jardin and St. Mary Parish Assessor Jarrod Longman.
During the meeting, entertainment was provided by the local choral group, Tuneweavers. The group presented a concert of Christmas music.
Vella urged members to attend the organization’s Christmas Dance 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday. Music will be by Rockin’ Oldies. Tickets are $6 in advance or $10 at the door. The AARP office is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
He also reminded everyone that the AARP New Year’s Dance will be 8 p.m. to midnight on Dec. 31 with music by Southern Image. Tickets, on sale at the office, are $10.
On Jan. 13, 2013, the organization’s Mardi Gras court, dance and buffet dinner will be held at the center. Tickets are $15. Music will be by the Marvin Blanchard Band.
Vella also spoke on the 2013 group tours that range from New York City, a Caribbean cruise, Washington, D.C., and Nashville, and others. Complete details are available at the AARP office.
The next meeting will be held Jan. 7 and will feature a spaghetti meal sponsored by Lirette Ford.
