St. Mary 4-H’ers attend 4-H Summer Camp

On May 27, two packed school buses left St. Mary Parish filled with elementary 4-H’ers on their way to Camp Grant Walker Educational Center in Pollock to attend 4-H Summer Camp, said Adriana Drusini, LSU AgCenter associate Extension agent and 4-H youth development.

“If you were to ask the 4-H’ers on the bus what their favorite activity in 4-H is, they would tell you 4-H Summer Camp,” she said. St. Mary Parish had a total of 77 elementary 4-H members attend.

While at camp, 4-H members chose from six different educational tracks in which to participate. The tracks this year were: Dramatic Arts; Get Ready, get SET — Science, Engineering and Technology; Outdoor Adventures; Explore Louisiana, Wetlands, Wildlife and YOU!; Fit 4 the Future: Get Ready, Get Set, Go!; and Hunter’s Safety Certification.

Campers also had recreational time in the afternoons and were able to swim in the pool, create handcrafted items, practice archery skills, go canoeing and kayaking, play sand volleyball, kickball, board games and much more. Evening programs included talent shows, skits, dances, vespers and special guest speakers.

Also attending 4-H Summer Camp were eight senior 4-H members who served as camp counselors and three adult 4-H volunteers who assisted with camp activities and helped chaperone.

Drusini said, “The 4-H Program gives special thanks to the St. Mary Parish School Board Transportation Unit for providing the buses and the St. Mary Parish Government for authorizing parish employees to drive the buses; they were the best drivers we could ask for!”
