Seven teams will converge at Central Catholic High School’s practice field Saturday for Central Catholic’s annual 7-on-7 football tournament.
In addition to the host team, Morgan City, Patterson, Franklin, Ellender, South Lafourche and Catholic High-Pointe Coupee will participate in a round-robin format.
Central Catholic coach Tommy Minton noted the participating teams will play against different styles of play.
“From a coach’s standpoint, it’s good at preparing your kids for the season, because they’re going to see some spread teams, they’re going to see some teams that are more play-action,” he said. “Defensively, you’ll see some zone, you’ll see some man, so you’re going to see a lot of different looks, and to me, that’s what’s good.”
The Central Catholic coach also was happy that Morgan City and Patterson will be participating.
“I’m glad to see that Morgan City’s in it,” Minton said. “I’m glad to see that Patterson’s in it, because that’s local teams, and we need to learn how to service each other and make each other better.”
Minton said a big part of the event is every team will be guaranteed five games.
Minton said what he hopes he and other coaches take from the tournament is their players compete.
“You’re quarterback’s going to get to throw, over the course of the day, about 100, 120 balls,” he said. “He’s going to get to develop timing with his receivers, and defensively, you’re going to get to defend a bunch of passes.”
He said the event is a chance for teams to get better.
“Nowadays, being able to do things like this in the summer, it puts you that much ahead when your fall camp starts,” Minton said. “You’re not starting from scratch.”
The event will feature action on one football field split into two 40-yard fields with the coaches and additional players occupying the space between the fields.
Games will be 20 minutes each with a 10-minute break between action.
As for scoring, touchdowns will be worth six points, while teams will have a chance for a passing extra point from the 5-yard line.
Teams also net two points for a stop on defense and three points for an interception.
Area action will consist of:
—Central Catholic vs. Ellender on Field 1 and Morgan City vs. Franklin on Field 2, both at 9 a.m.
—Patterson vs. South Lafourche on Field 1 at 9:30 a.m.
—Central Catholic vs. Catholic High-Pointe Coupee on Field 1 and Franklin vs. Patterson on Field 2, both at 10 a.m.
—Morgan City vs. South Lafourche on Field 2 at 10:30 a.m.
