SMC, Morgan City win big

Three of the four St. Mary Parish squads in postseason youth baseball play Thursday evening won in dominating fashion.
St. Mary Central and Morgan City each won in routs during the 12-year-old district tournament in Thibodaux, while St. Mary’s Pony League squad, comprised of 14 year olds from across the parish, also won big.
In the 12-year-old action, St. Mary Central defeated Patterson, 15-3, at Peltier Park on Thursday.
Blake Hidalgo picked up the win for St. Mary, pitching three innings and striking out six while walking five. Cameron Wiley pitched two more innings, allowing three runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Gregory Leger led SMC at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance, including a grand slam and six RBIs. He scored one run.
Other SMC offensive standouts were Hidalgo, 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored; and Austin Price, 1-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
In the defeat, Brennan Gouaux pitched 3.2 innings, surrendering seven runs on two hits with seven walks and nine strikeouts. John Brooks pitched 0.1 inning for Patterson, allowing three runs on two hits with four walks and one strikeout, while Joel Singleton added an inning of work. He surrendered five runs on four hits.
Gouaux led the Patterson offense with a 2-for-3 performance with an RBI.
Haydan Pinho and Jamey Fabre each finished 1-for-2 with an RBI apiece, also.
Thursday’s game was the second in five days that Patterson and St. Mary Central squared off against each other.
On Sunday at the Patterson Invitation, the teams played to a 2-2 tie.
With the win, St. Mary Central advances to the second round of the winner’s bracket where they will face Franklin at 8 p.m. today. Franklin defeated Thibodaux 5-1 Thursday.
During last weekend’s Patterson Invitational, St. Mary Central defeated Franklin 9-1.
Patterson will face Thibodaux in an elimination game today at 6 p.m.
In the nightcap Thursday, Morgan City routed Pierre Part, 18-0, in three innings.
The local squad scored 11 runs in the first inning and seven more in the second frame.
Scotty Comeaux led off the game with a solo home run for Morgan City, while Thomas Garber added a two-run home run later in the game.
On the mound, Ethan Scioneaux pitched the first two innings for Morgan City, while Zachary Lacoste pitched the final frame.
The matchup was the second between the two teams in five days as Morgan City routed Pierre Part, 12-0, on Sunday in the Patterson Invitational.
With the win, Morgan City will receive a bye to the third round of the winner’s bracket where they will play again on Saturday at 8 p.m. against the winner of the SMC/Franklin matchup.
In last weekend’s action, Morgan City fell to St. Mary Central, 5-3, but beat Franklin, 3-0.
In Pony League Section Tournament action Thursday in Bayou Vista, St. Mary defeated Coteau, 15-7.
Neal Michael Theriot earned the win for St. Mary.
At the plate, Daniel Gray led St. Mary with a 2-for-2 performance and two RBIs, while John Hebert finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Jonathon Bertrand led Coteau with a 3-for-4 performance and an RBI.
With the win, St. Mary will play Arnaudville at 8 p.m. today, while Coteau will play Erath in an elimination game at 6 p.m.
In Thursday’s first game, Arnaudville defeated Erath, 8-7.
Myles Fruse earned the win for Arnaudville.
Alex Olivier led Arnaudville at the plate, with a 3-for-4 performance and two RBIs, while Lain Quebedeaux added a 3-for-3 performance and an RBI.
Taylor Abshire led Erath with three RBIs.
