Simon will compete in national rodeo

A Patterson High School graduate has earned a spot on the Louisiana state National High School Rodeo team and will be competing at the annual National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyo., Sunday through July 20

Kaleb Simon will compete in the bareback competition.

The rodeo will feature more than 1,500 contestants from 41 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia. It is the world’s largest rodeo.

In addition to competing for a national championship, contestants will be competing for more than $200,000 in prizes and more than $350,000 in college scholarships.

Simon is a member of the SugarFest High School Rodeo Club where he served as the vice president this year.

During the Louisiana rodeo state finals, Simon won the Ernest Kyle Memorial Scholarship on June 7 and was offered a scholarship to ride college rodeo for Wharton County Junior College in Wharton, Texas.

This is Simon’s second year riding bareback horses and his second year as part of the Louisiana national team.

He began his career by attending the Southeast Texas Bareback Riding School in Waller, Texas, in November 2011 and then came home and joined the Louisiana High School Rodeo and qualified for nationals his first year.

Simon has trained with Clint Cannon and Kirby Cannon, professional bare-back riders.

In next week’s event, contestants must finish in the top 20 based on their combined times/scores in the first two rounds to advance to the final round on July 20. National champions then will be determined based on their three-round combined times/scores.

The Saturday championship performance will be televised nationally as a part of the Cinch Town Tour telecast series on RFD-TV. Live broadcast of each NHSFR performances also will air at Performance times are 7 p.m. Sunday, and 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. each day thereafter.
