Simon competing in national event
Kaleb Simon, a sophomore at Patterson High School, is competing this week with members of the Louisiana State High School Rodeo Team at the 64th annual National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyo.
Simon, who will be competing in the bareback competition, is one of more than 1,500 contestants from 41 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia that will be featured at the event. The National High School Finals is the world’s largest rodeo.
Participants will compete for more than $200,000 in prizes as well as more than $350,000 in college scholarships.
Contestants who finish in the top 20 after two go-rounds of competition will advance to Saturday night’s final championship performance.
Simon will compete tonight and Friday morning for a shot at qualifying for the short go-round on Saturday.
Simon began bareback riding in November 2011 when he attended the Southeast Texas Bareback Riding School.
He previously competed in calf roping, but his calf died, so he moved on to bareback riding to continue to compete in rodeos.
From November until May, he competed in the Little Britches Association, in which he also qualified for nationals in Pueblo, Colo.
Simon qualified for both by collecting points at different events.
His competition in the Little Britches season began in November and concluded May, while his competition in the high school rodeo began in March. From March on, he has traveled to high school rodeos across the state nearly every weekend.
This weekend’s competition is scheduled to air on Dish Network channel 231 and DIRECTTV channel 345.
All NHSFR action will be broadcast live via iHigh.com on its audio web cast.
