Sheriff’s office warns of local phone scam
The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating two incidents of attempted extortion.
The victims were contacted on their mobile phones and told that one of their family members was being held for ransom. The perpetrator, a male with a foreign accent, created a sense of urgency over the phone by making threats against the family member’s life and/or stating that the family member was involved in a car crash.
In both cases the telephone number from which the call came was the same. That number is 779-548-1198.
A quick Internet search reveals that these calls are occurring nationwide. These calls are one of the latest incarnations of phone scams created to attempt to steal money.
These scams come in all shapes and sizes. Be alert and never hesitate to call authorities.
If you suspect that a scammer is targeting you contact your local law enforcement agency.
The SMPSO may be reached at 337-828-1960 or 985-384-1622.
In addition to alerting local authorities, scams may also be reported online at www.ic3.gov. The Internet Crime Complaint Center is a partnership between the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center, funded in part by the Bureau of Justice Assistance. The site also provides information and tips for the public on how scams work and how to avoid them.
