Sales taxes a mixed bag
St. Mary sales and use taxes for the first quarter of 2012 offered a mixed bag of good and bad news.
Sales taxes collected in March were up about $114,000 over last year but taxes for the quarter were down $165,000 from last year when taxes collected by examinations are backed out of the total.
Overall collections remitted to local governments were up for the quarter but the underlying economy did not perform as well this quarter compared to last year. However March collections may have signaled a slight turn upward.
For March 2012, gross collections were $2.9 million compared to $2.8 million last year. Taxes collected by examinations were $27,006 this year compared to $136,735 last year. For the first three months of 2012, gross collections were $9.6 million compared to $9.4 million a year ago. Taxes collected by examinations for 2012 were $409,222 compared to only $163,379 last year.
Collection expenses were down this year compared to 2011, resulting in a total of $9.4 million distributed to local governments from the net tax proceeds.
Year to date distributions included the St. Mary Parish School Board, $4.4 million; Parish Council, $1.5 million; City of Morgan City, $1.1 million; City of Franklin, $675,333; Sheriff’s Office, $634,996; City of Patterson, $469,673; Town of Berwick, $406,286 and the Town of Baldwin, $193,823.
