Rural St Martin garbage, trash collection starts in May

ST. MARTINVILLE, La. (AP) — Residents in rural St. Martin Parish will be required to pay for garbage and trash service beginning in May.

Parish President Guy Cormier tells The Advocate ( the rural areas also will see a new automated pick-up system that requires residents to use 96-gallon roll carts provided by garbage contractor Waste Management.

Cormier says the majority of rural residents already have voluntary service with Waste Management and the only change for them will be the new carts. He says the mandatory service should bring in a small group of residents who currently burn or bury their trash, toss it into Bayou Teche or leave it in the bins of local businesses.

"We are hoping this program definitely reduces the amount of waste we see," he said.

Waste Management is coordinating delivery of the new carts, he said.

Cormier said St. Martin was the only parish in Acadiana area where rural service remained voluntary.

He said the switch was prompted in part by prospects of a rate increase for established customers who had been paying voluntarily.

Changing to a mandatory service will keep the same basic rates that rural residents now pay, he said.

Residential trash service for rural areas of upper St. Martin will be $15.86 a month for once-a-week trash pickup, once-a-month recycling and twice-a-month pickup of white goods, yard debris and other bulky waste.

Residents in lower St. Martin, an area geographically separated by a portion of Iberia Parish, will pay $17.77 a month for twice-a-week trash service, once-a-month recycling and twice-a-month pickup of bulky waste.

Cormier said the rate for lower St. Martin is higher because that area will receive twice-a-week service under a contract that will piggyback on the garbage contract in neighboring Assumption Parish.
