Record number attends St. Mary AARP meeting
St. Mary AARP Chapter 4435 held its March 5 meeting with a record 360 members in attendance.
The evening meal was sponsored by local attorney Greg Aucoin. Aucoin spoke briefly about his role as a public official, his law practice in the private sector and thanked AARP for allowing him to be part of the meeting.
The meal included white beans and rice, sausage and salad prepared by Mac McNemar, Pat Fryer, Linda Darce and Alicia Robicheaux. Birthday/anniversary cake was provided by M C Bank followed by coffee courtesy of Mid South Bank.
AARP members and guests were treated to the musical talents of Hubert Francis and Charlie Fryer from 4-5:30 p.m. followed by bingo from 5:30-6:15 p.m.
Guest speaker Dr. Brett Casey of the Houma Orthopedic Clinic offered some insight as to how orthopedic care could help make a longer life more enjoyable. He then became the chapter’s newest sponsor by presenting the chapter with a check for $600 that will be used as door prizes during the next 12 monthly meetings.
Also addressing the meeting was Judith Allain. She announced that Techeland Arts Council’s production “No Hitchin’ — What a Ride” will present an encore performance Friday through Sunday at the Teche Theater for the Performing Arts on Main Street in Franklin.
Tickets are available at The Frame Shop in Morgan City, and at Fad’s Trophy and Gift Shop, and Cashway Pharmacy, both in Franklin.
Final guest speakers for the evening were retired schoolteachers Diane Martin and Linda Thomas. They discussed their book titled “Education: Roast and Toast.”
The authors have a combined 60-years experience in the classroom and the book gives the reader a chance to read jokes, sayings and thoughts from the authors’ years of teaching. Vice President Curtis Leonard ended the meeting with drawings for door prizes. He also gave thanks to Lou Campos’ “Louettes” for their dance performance and thanked all the meeting’s volunteers.
