Police arrest Amelia man for 2009 rape of 8-year-old
After a month of investigation by the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office, Charles D. Wilkerson, 53, of Martin Lane in Amelia was arrested and taken into custody by the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Wilkerson has since been transferred to the Assumption Parish Detention Center, where he was booked yesterday for one count of aggravated rape of an 8-year-old girl in Bayou L’Ourse three years ago.
In February, the mother of the now 11-year-old noticed a handwritten letter on her table. She read the letter, which was her daughter’s story of how she was raped by a babysitter in summer 2009. In early March, the child was interviewed at the Child Advocacy Center in Thibodaux and told the details of the rape.
Wilkerson is registered as a sex offender, stemming from a 2011 conviction of indecent behavior with a juvenile in St. Mary Parish.
Elsewhere, Crystal Tomino, 24, of Gretna was arrested Tuesday afternoon by the Berwick Police Department for driving while intoxicated, no proof of insurance, and driving under suspension. She also has outstanding warrants both in Morgan City and in Terrebonne Parish. No bond has yet been set.
