Bayou Vista Knights of Columbus Council 6211 Grand Knight Huey Daigle awarded $100 Catholic Youth Leadership Awards to Olivia Gilbert and Drew Landry. Two winners of the competition are awarded every year and advance to the regional competition and possible state competition. Landry and Gilbert were both graduating seniors of Berwick High School this year and are members of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Bayou Vista.
Hadassah Women United awarded two scholarships to Morgan City High School students during their awards banquet earlier this year. The first scholarship was awarded in honor of DeAngelo “Yummy” Williams to Kaitlyn Verret. She received a one-time scholarship in the amount of $500. The second scholarship was awarded to Tieriana Regine Weary in the amount of $500 in honor of Gerald Jerome Molo. From left are Verret, scholarship initiator Lena Turner and Weary.
Numerous area officials attended an open house at Morgan City Healthcare Center June 25 to tour the facility and learn about its programs. The Morgan City Rotary Club 2014 “Citizen of the Year” is Clarence Robinson Jr., executive director of the Berwick Housing Authority and interim director of the Morgan City Housing Authority. The award, along with the Paul Harris Fellow award, is presented to a citizen whose actions clearly demonstrates attributes of a role model for others to emulate, one who does good for others because it is the right thing to do, and one whose acts of kindness contribute to the well-being of the general community.
Vicky Nunn, daughter of Francis and Shirley Sweet, graduated magna cum laude, third in her class, from Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, Texas. She is an inductee of the Theta Kappa Honor Society, Who’s Who Honor Society and was voted student of the year by the president, administration and faculty of Southwestern Christian College. Nunn is a 1979 graduate of Berwick High School.
The fifth annual water safety event, Aqua Safety First Community Program, was held Saturday at Lake End Park in Morgan City. Charlette Angeron, 911 District director for St. Mary Parish Communications, presented safety tips for people using waterways. The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Department and Morgan City Fire Department were on hand to display rescue equipment. Viewing some of the equipment is Briley Domingue, 4, with his mother, Darcie Domingue, right, of Belle Rose and her friend, Candy Brown of Thibodaux.
