Patterson places third at biddy national tournament
The Patterson Biddy Basketball 11-and-12-year-old All-Stars placed third in Division 2 at the national biddy tournament this postseason.
The squad finished 5-2 at the national event, while two players, Patterson’s Donquan Tillman and Dajon Richard were named All-Americans and Jamey Fabre received votes.
During the tournament, Patterson began with a 5-0 mark, including a 3-0 record in pool play. The squad defeated Kenner by a point, Jefferson Parish’s 11-year-olds by five points and Morgan City, a team they had struggled with during the season, by 12 points.
In bracket play, Patterson defeated Kansas City before downing Raceland by 10 points.
In the winners’ bracket semifinals, the squad fell to West St. James by one point in a game in which coach Brandon Harden said his team put forth a solid defensive effort but struggled to make shots.
In the semifinals of the losers’ bracket, the squad fell to the same Kenner team they had beaten earlier in the tournament.
Earlier in the season at regionals, which Patterson hosted and was the qualifying tournament for nationals, the local squad fell by one point in its first game but bounced back games in the losers bracket to qualify for nationals.
Eventually Vermilion, a squad Patterson had defeated by three points a few weeks prior, eliminated Patterson from the regional tournament.
Morgan City beat Vermilion to win the regional.
In tournament play two weeks prior to nationals, the squad won the Centerville tournament by beating Thibodaux.
During the team’s first tournament, Patterson beat Mandeville. According to Harden, Mandeville had not lost in three years and was the former back-to-back Biddy National champions. Morgan City later eliminated them from the tournament.
