Patterson falls to New Iberia in nondistrict play
From Staff Reports
The New Iberia Yellow Jackets managed to do something Tuesday that only Central Catholic had managed to do all season: beat the Patterson Lumberjacks.
The ‘Jacks dropped just their third game of the season on the road in non-district action, falling 46-43 to Class 5A New Iberia.
The ‘Jacks got off to a quick start, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 15-7 in the first quarter.
However, the home standing squad clawed its way back into the game, outscoring the ‘Jacks 26-15 during the next two quarters to head into the fourth with a 33-30 lead.
Both teams scored 13 points in the final quarter.
Tremaine Lightfoot was the lone Patterson player in double figures with 12 points. Other PHS scorers included Dylan Sanders, seven points; Gino Hall, six; Deondre Skinner, five; Tarrike Phillips, four; and Trevon Stewart, Jedrick Gunner and Denzel Johnson each with three.
“This was not our best effort of the season,” Patterson coach Ryan Taylor said. “We were not good in the fundamentals of the game last night. We didn’t block out. We didn’t screen. We didn’t handle the ball. But with all that, we still had a shot with 20 seconds left to tie and a desperation shot to tie as the clock ran out.
“We very easily and probably should have been blown out,” he added. “So I have to give my kids some credit for finding a way to stay close even when things were not going good for us. But New Iberia had a lot to do with that. They deserve a lot of credit. They played hard and made more plays than we did.”
The ‘Jacks will return to district play on Friday when they host Franklin.
The ‘Jills, who had the night off, will be in action Friday at home against Franklin as well.
