Patterson begins self-assessment

PATTERSON — A group of civic and governmental leaders has formed a committee which will develop a program supported by community resources with the goal of creating a city that is globally competitive.

Patterson held its kick-off meeting for the Louisiana Development Ready Communities program Wednesday so that local committee members could learn from state officials what work needs to be done in the coming years.

LDRC is an ongoing statewide readiness program with the goal of making Louisiana’s communities more competitive. Success involves understanding that both economic and community development work hand in hand. A strategic plan will be developed by the committee, with the community’s help, and implemented by the community to achieve this goal.

When complete, a report will summarize the Patterson area’s strengths and weaknesses; an overview of recommendations for the area; a summary of key data and findings specific to the community; and will include information customized to each particular sector of life such as education, business and the like.

Co-chairmen of the committee are Dr. Rand Dooley and City Administrator Dave Lowery. Anne Perry is the project manager. Citizens should look forward to participating in surveys and polls as well as public meetings in the future.

Other committee members include Frank Fink, economic development chair; Susan Mendoza, community facilities chair; Donna Bates-Ruffin, quality of life chair; Mike Brocato, education and workforce chair; Larry Mendoza, governance and organizations chair; Mack Spencer, communications and marketing chair; and Mayor Rodney Grogan.

Patterson was one of five municipalities admitted to the LRDC program in May, along with Baker, Opelousas, Mansfield and Stonewall.

Nearby communities St. Martinville, New Iberia, Houma and Donaldsonville also participate.
