Parochial school students getting a few extra days of summer vacation

MORGAN CITY, La. -- While St. Mary Parish public school students return on Wednesday, private school students in the eastern end of the parish have a few extra days to enjoy summer.

Central Catholic High School students report Aug. 12.

Holy Cross Elementary first through sixth graders begin school Aug. 8, while pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students will attend starting Aug. 19.

Immanuel Christian School students begin Aug. 12. Meet the Teacher days will be held Aug. 8 and 9, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days, for students to bring their supplies to school and meet their new teachers.

Central Catholic remains the only private school in St. Mary Parish participating in the Louisiana Scholarship Program, commonly known as the “voucher” program.

According to the state Department of Education’s website, the program provides low-income families the financial resources to send their child to the school of their choice.

There are 117 schools state-wide participating in the voucher program, according to the website.

Central Catholic Principal Vic Bonnaffee said he has six students registered for this school year under the voucher program. There were 28 total openings at the school.

The school started the 2012-13 year with nine students attending on vouchers and ended with five, Bonnaffee said.
