Ordinances introduced raising city council pay

Two ordinances were introduced Tuesday that would raise pay for council members and the mayor pro tempore.

Councilman Dale Rogers introduced the ordinances which will lay over until the council’s April meeting and a possible vote.

The ordinances would raise the pay of single-member district councilmen to $850 per month and the mayor pro-tempore to $950 per month. All members currently are paid $500 per month with a $150 expense allowance. The new pay would eliminate the expense allowance.

In other business Tuesday, the council heard from Brenda Viator of the Mom2Mom program at Crossing Place Fellowship church.

She said the group is Christian-based that encourages mothers to “share a common goal to strengthen the family core. We want to encourage moms to know that other women have walked where they walk and survived; to equip them and fully embrace whatever season of motherhood they find themselves in and inspire them to be all the mom they can be.”

The group is having a Spring Fest, the third such event, April 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the church grounds on Northwest Boulevard in Franklin. There will be food and arts and crafts vendors, United Blood Services will host a spring blood drive, and donors will receive free meals. There will also be door prizes, Viator said.

The council also heard from Toddy Boudreaux, chairperson for the local Relay for Life and team captain for the Franklin Fire Department’s team.

Set for April 27 at 4 p.m. and running until 6 a.m. the next morning at Franklin Senior High School. The theme is “Grooving for a Cure,” he said.

Teams do not have to stay all night, Boudreaux said, and there will be food for sale, auctions and a car show, arts and crafts booths, live entertainment, games for all ages and a fireworks display.

Boudreaux said the event’s goal is to raise $31,000. Nine teams have registered so far, and he hopes for at least 16.

All proceeds go directly to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life program.
