Merle Mire Groce, 88, a resident of Spring, Texas, peacefully went to be with our Lord Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, surrounded by members of her family.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at Pharr Chapel United Methodist Church in Morgan City with the Rev. L. John Locascio officiating. There will be a short graveside service at Morgan City Cemetery immediately following the memorial service. Afterward, visitation with family and friends will be held at the Fellowship Hall at Pharr Chapel.
Merle was born July 29, 1925, in Morgan City, to Albert A. and Angelina St. Clair Mire.
She was married to Robert J. Harrison of Brunswick, Ga., in 1945 until his death in 1972. She remarried to Thomas L. Groce of Chatham, N.C., in 1977 until his death in 1991.
Merle graduated from Morgan City High School and over the years was employed by Citizen’s Bank, First National Bank and The Morgan City Archives where she retired in 2005 to live with her daughter and family in Spring, Texas.
She is survived by her three daughters, Patricia Harrison Beard and husband, John, of Spring, Texas, Pamela Harrison Bergeron and husband, Artie, of Tooele, Utah, and Paula Harrison Smith and husband, Bruce, of Dillon, Mont.; one brother, Donald Mire and wife, Sweetie, of Amelia; sisters, Nina Mire Hidalgo of Bastrop, Texas, and Elaine Mire Hilliard and husband, William, of Ennis, Texas; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Michael and Kirstie; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother; step-mother, Annie Lee Maxwell Mire; brothers, Gerald Mire and Neal Mire; sisters, Carmen Guarisco, Doris Guzzina, Carolyn Goulas and Gladys Guarisco.
Merle will be remembered by her gentle nature, sweet smile, love of flowers and birds and most of all her love for her family.
