North Vermilion Patriots squeeze by FHS Hornets

A lack of execution down the stretch caused the Franklin Hornets to come on the short end of a 6-0 District 9-3A loss to the North Vermilion Patriots Friday at J.C. Dry Stadium.

While the two combatants were locked in an old fashioned defense struggle, the stage was set for Franklin to pull out a come-from-behind game-tying touchdown with 3:43 remaining in the hard-fought contest.

On the drive, Franklin quarterback Jarion Brown sparked the Hornets offense during the final span with a first down pass of 16 yards to Allen Randle before connecting with Brennan Robinson for nine more yards. On second and one, Franklin running back Brian Robertson rushed for four yards, setting up the Hornets with a first down at the 44. A short time later, Robinson hauled in a 19-yard strike from Brown, giving FSHS hope at the Patriots’ 39. After an illegal procedure penalty, Franklin squandered any chance of earning the dramatic win as an errant pass fell harmlessly to the ground on a fourth-down play.

A fourth down penalty in the second quarter wiped out the Hornets’ lone touchdown in the second quarter. On a fourth-and-five from the 10, Brown fired a pass to the waiting hands of Robinson before an offensive pass interference thwarted the Hornets chance as North Vermilion took over possession of the ball along with a 15-yard walk-off on the penalty.

North Vermilion kicker Trey Broussard’s two field goals of 34 and 43 yards were the difference in the game as the North Vermilion Patriots squeezed past Franklin by the final score of 6-0. With the win, the Patriots moved to a 2-0 in District 9-3A action while the Hornets slipped to 0-2 in league play.

Both teams had their touchdowns nullified by penalties with Franklin having its drive stopped by a questionable fourth down offensive pass interference call by the officials. On the play, Brown fired a bullet to Robinson before a flag negated the touchdown, giving the Patriots the football at their own 25 yard line.

Later in the contest, North Vermilion had a penalty levied against the Patriots for holding negated their touchdown leading to a field goal which sailed right, leaving them as NVHS clung to the 6-0 advantage in the later moments of the fourth quarter.

Any chances Franklin had of posting a comeback win were soon dashed as an emotional game-ending drive ended with an errant fourth-down pass enabling North Vermilion to hold on for the 6-0 win.

North Vermilion (3-2, 2-0) managed two field goals while tallying 184 total yards with the total pickup coming via the rush.

Franklin (2-3, 0-2) amassed 214 total yards with 124 on the ground and 90 more through the air. Franklin was able to drive deep into North Vermilion territory before untimely penalties hampered scoring opportunities.

Brown led the Hornets rushing attack with 18 carries for 54 yards with Brian Robertson gaining 47 yards on 13 attempts with Charles Webb picking up 30 yards on seven tries and Brandon McFarlane rushing for three yards on one attempt.

Brown completed 9 of 22 passes for 90 yards while Brennan Robinson had five catches for 54 yards. Derrick Kelly caught two passes for 30 yards while Allen Randle had one catch for 10 yards.

Franklin will play host to Morgan City next Friday for homecoming in non-district action.
