CCHS wins state championship

LAKE CHARLES -- Central Catholic scored six points in the final 28.4 seconds of Saturday's Class 1A State Championship contest to overcome a three-point deficit to North Central and clinch the school's first-ever state basketball championship.
Down 64-61, Central Catholic's Randi Brown scored on a layin with 28.5 seconds left to cut the deficit to 64-63 and Central Catholic called timeout with 28.4 seconds remaining.
Soon after, North Central turned the ball over and Central Catholic's Meo Knight was fouled with 14.4 seconds remaining, sending her to the free throw line for two shots. Knight sank both to give the Lady Eagles a 65-64 lead.
With North Central on offense and 8.8 seconds remaining, Central Catholic's Gee Garrett stole the ball when a North Central player threw the ball down court and Garrett was fouled on the play, sending her to the free throw line.
Garrett sank both free throws for a 67-64 lead.
While North Central got the ball down court, a 3-point attempt by Jazlyn Robertson bobbled in the rim but didn't fall.
Central Catholic got the defensive rebound, the clock ran out and the celebration began.
Brown was named the game's Most Outstanding Player after recording 23 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals. Knight had 25 points, eight rebounds, two blocks, two assists and three steals.
Megan Landry also reached double figures for the Lady Eagles with 12 points as well as six rebounds and one block.
Sydney Martin led North Central with 27 points and also had five rebounds, three steals, one assist and one block.
