New Morgan City police chief to be announced tonight

MORGAN CITY, La. — Mayor Frank “Boo” Grizzaffi is expected to announce the city’s new police chief tonight at the city council meeting.

Grizzaffi narrowed the police chief candidate field Feb. 15 to three candidates. They are Lt. James Blair, Lt. Travis Crouch and Sgt. Teddy Liner. The mayor is the appointing authority, but his appointment must be approved by the council.

The city has not had a police chief since former chief Marc Folse retired in September. Assistant Chief Glenn Blanco has been leading the police department since that time.

The council meets at 6 p.m. at the city court building.

Also on the agenda is an update on the city’s garbage truck shortage since a garbage truck caught on fire and went out of service in January. The city has just two side-loader garbage trucks to pick up garbage.

The council will also decide on a resolution to declare surplus property, a resolution to supplement the lease between the city and H&B Young Foundation, a resolution for furnishing all materials for the 138 kV gas circuit breaker in the amount of $49,903 and a resolution to enter into a cooperative agreement with police officer John Schaff to care for retired drug dog, Betsey, a Belgian Malinois.

Guests coming before the council include the Cypress Sawmill Festival Queen and Teen Queen, and Beverly Domengeaux of the St. Mary Council on Aging and Janada Anslum Price with a boot drive to benefit fallen Chitimacha Police Officer Rick Riggenbach’s family.

The council will hear the planning and zoning commission’s recommendations to re-subdivide 1114 and 1116 Second Street and to re-subdivide 2107 Sixth Street, 633 Louisa Street and 720 Louisa Street, and the finance committee’s recommendations to purchase two coin-operated washers and dryers at Lake End Park.
