Murder suspect’s bail set at $500k
MORGAN CITY, La. -- The 51-year-old Morgan City man who was charged with second degree murder Thursday has his bail set at $500,000, according to the parish jail’s inmate automated reporting system.
Keith Allen Murphy, 51, of the 500 block of Bush Street in Morgan City, was arrested Thursday for the second degree murder of Robert Michael Gasek, 57, of the 2300 block of Clements Street in Morgan City.
Murphy is being held at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center in Centerville.
On Thursday, Morgan City police received a call around 4:30 a.m. from a complainant about a fight at a residence located on Clements Street in Morgan City, Morgan City Police Chief Travis Crouch said.
A second caller advised dispatch that a man was at the residence, also advising of a fight and that a man was possibly deceased, he said.
Officers arrived at the residence where they encountered a man, identified as Murphy, who was also living at the residence in the 2300 block of Clements Street, Crouch said.
Murphy told officers about an argument that occurred inside the residence, and said Gasek may be deceased, Crouch said. Murphy had been living with Gasek on a temporary basis, Crouch said.
Officers found Gasek in the living room of the residence with severe injuries to his head area, and Acadian Ambulance was called to the scene, Crouch said. Gasek succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by the St. Mary Parish coroner at 7:25 a.m. Thursday, Crouch said.
The preliminary investigation showed that Gasek appears to have died from blunt force trauma to the head, Crouch said Thursday.
Murphy was taken into custody, interviewed by detectives, and then charged with second degree murder, Crouch said.
