Motorcycle accident in Berwick claims 2 lives
A Bayou Vista couple died Saturday night after a motorcycle accident in Berwick.
Eugene Lee LeNoir, 41, and Sarah LeNoir, 40, were riding a 2003 Harley Davidson which struck the rear of a vehicle in the turning lane on La. 182 in front of Country Club Express Chevron around 11:15 p.m.
The motorcycle was headed westbound when the driver, believed to be E. LeNoir, struck the rear of a 2012 Honda Civic driven by Colby Mahfouz of Bayou Vista. The moderate speed accident caused the couple to be thrown from their motorcycle into the eastbound lane of the highway, Berwick Police Chief James Richard said.
There, they were struck by two vehicles. The first was a 1998 Dodge Dakota driven by Paige Garrett, 18, of Amelia, and the second was a 1997 Ford Mustang driven by Ashlea Shufflebotham, 19, of Morgan City.
Garrett left the scene, apparently unaware of what she had struck, but later returned to speak with officers, Richard said. The chief said his office is consulting with the district attorney’s office to decide whether to file hit and run charges against Garrett.
All three teens were tested on the intoxilyzer, as is the requirement in Louisiana with any fatal or serious injury accident, and all were found to be sober. Tests are pending on the deceased.
Richard said that the initial crash likely was survivable on its own, but he did not know why the motorcycle failed to stop. The chief also said there was no indication that the crash was avoidable for Garrett and Shufflebotham as the victims were wearing dark clothes on a dark highway late at night.
