Morgan City still perfect in district
MORGAN CITY — The Morgan City 10U All-Stars moved one step closer to advancing in postseason play with a 9-0 win against Patterson in the District 3 AAA Tournament Tuesday evening.
But even with the tournament’s lone 3-0 mark entering the final night of play, Morgan City still hasn’t secured a spot in the next round of competition as either the first- or second-place team from a district.
A win tonight against Thibodaux, though, would give Morgan City the district championship and allow them to advance to the Southern Regional in Sulphur beginning July 19.
Besides Morgan City, Franklin and Thibodaux are vying for the two coveted spots to move on in postseason play. The district runner-up will advance to the North Regional in Vidalia, which also will begin July 19.
A Morgan City win tonight means not only a district championship for the squad, but it also will mean that Franklin (2-1) will be the district’s runner-up, regardless if it wins or loses, because it holds the head-to-head tiebreaker against Thibodaux (2-1) by virtue of an 8-0 win against Thibodaux in Tuesday’s nightcap.
If Morgan City loses, however, then there will be a three way tie and the two spots will be settled by runs allowed between games involving the tied teams, and, if necessary, total runs allowed by the three teams in the tournament.
In Tuesday’s win, Morgan City’s Luke Barbier earned the win and tossed a no-hitter in five innings of action. He fanned eight.
Trent Hillen came on in relief and gave up a hit and fanned three in the sixth inning.
At the plate, Matthew Mire finished 3-for-4, while Brett Morell and Hugh Hamer each were 2-for-3. Other top contributors were Jacob Blum, 1-for-2; and Barbier, Hillen, Zach Bennett and Gunnar Theriot, all 1-for-3.
Drake Burgess, who finished 1-for-3, recorded Patterson’s lone hit.
