Morgan City man faces drug charges

MORGAN CITY, La. — Starting Sunday, the Rite Aid in Morgan City on Victor II Boulevard will be open 24 hours, seven days a week.

Just the front of the store will be open 24 hours. The pharmacy will maintain its normal hours, said Rite Aid spokesman Eric Harkreader.

The store is designated as a “wellness” store, which is one reason, the corporation decided to open it 24 hours, Harkreader said. “Part of the reasoning for the expanded hours has to do with that wellness store format. Many of our wellness stores offer expanded hours,” he said. “We are expanding both our health and wellness offerings but also our everyday lifestyle offerings so that fits very well with providing the expanded hours so people can access us anytime.”

The store’s pharmacy hours will continue to be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, he said.

The Rite Aid is not the only pharmacy scheduled to open round the clock in the city.

Beginning April 1, the Walgreens store on Brashear Avenue in Morgan City will be open 24 hours, seven days a week.

The store extended its hours last year to be open from 7 a.m. to midnight, said store manager Ericca Halford.

“When I first got here it was 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and we saw that there was a need to open earlier and stay later,” Halford said. She has been store manager for two years, she said.

Opening an hour earlier has been good for business, she said. “With people going to school and to work, that 7 to 8 a.m. rush has worked out really well,” Halford said.

“This has been doing so well … we realized there is nothing else open 24 hours besides Walmart,” she said.

The store will start out just having the front of the store, and the pharmacy will maintain its normal hours of 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays, Halford said.

They will see how business goes and then consider opening the pharmacy 24 hours, Halford said. Their long-term goal is to open the pharmacy 24 hours, she said.

Keeping the store open later has also been successful for the store, she said. “You’ve got all kinds of different industry around here. The people that get off late need a place to come shop, too.”

Harkreader said Rite Aid has not announced any plans to change the pharmacy hours at the Victor II Boulevard location.

The Rite Aid store on U.S. 90 in Bayou Vista will keep its regular store hours and does not have plans to open 24 hours at this time, he said.

CVS corporate spokesman Mike DeAngelis said there are no plans to have the CVS Pharmacy on La. 182 in Morgan City open 24 hours.
