MORGAN CITY JAMBOREE: Wolfpack’s first half outburst leads to win over Morgan City

By: SCOTT JOINER
West St. Mary’s football team started its season off Friday with a promising 34-7 win over Morgan City in the jamboree at Tiger Stadium.

“We started off good — had a good first half and started off strong,” WSM coach Ryan Antoine said. “We did some good things, but in the second half I’m not happy with how we played. We got sloppy. We started missing assignments. We’ve got to learn how to put two and two together. … I’m overall happy with the effort and hustle — they did a good job. But we need to learn how to play a complete game. It starts for real next week.”

The Wolfpack took a 27-0 lead in the first of two 15-minute halves.

Junior quarterback Trovell Dixon scored the first touchdown on a 9-yard scramble.

Jovan Anderson converted the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing MCHS drive a snap was high over the quarterback’s head and recovered by senior Jerald Hawkins.

Dixon dropped back on the first play of the drive and found Daijuan Stewart on a 13-yard touchdown pass.

Jontrey Tillman snagged an interception and returned it for a touchdown to make it 21-0 WSM and a bootleg by Dixon just before half had the Wolfpack in the driver’s seat.

The extra point missed to make it 26-0 at the break.

Morgan City answered on the first drive of the second half with senior slot-receiver Austin Stroud snagging two passes and Adeyemi Wheeler picking up crucial first downs to put the Tigers on the goal line.

Junior Hoang Ngyuen scored on a quarterback sneak stretching the ball out over the goal line to give MCHS its first points, making it 27-7.

WSM continued to move the ball effectively on its next drive with Dixon scoring his third touchdown of the jamboree on a 10-yard scramble with two craft moves that found a clear path to the end zone for a 34-7 Wolfpack lead that would hold up for the win.

The Wolfpack starts the season at home Friday at 7 p.m. against Franklin and the Tigers will open the season on the road against Comeaux at 7 p.m.
