Morgan City High School library project approved

MORGAN CITY, La. — Approval was given Tuesday to move forward with a project to provide a new library and media center at Morgan City High School.

The District 3 Maintenance Committee gave the go ahead to make final changes to architectural designs during their meeting at the school.

Bids will be opened Nov. 7, with the start of construction scheduled for December. Completion of the library portion of the project is scheduled for late June 2014, and completion of an associated air conditioning project is scheduled for completion in late July 2014, according to a timeline presented by project architect Carl Blum.

The air conditioner work consists of replacement of some classroom air handling units and associated ductwork. New controls will be installed to allow individual classroom control of temperature.

Cost of the total project is estimated at $3.5 million.

The project utilizes the unused “old” girls’ gym to create additional classroom space on a second floor to be constructed as well as a library and media center on the first floor. A student commons area will be created through a renovation of unused locker rooms between the two original gyms.

The commons area will be designed off the new library as a way of connecting the two main wings.

The library will facilitate stack space, reading areas, computers, multi-media production and storage. A class-sized meeting area will be provided within the library as well as a computer lab.

“The full height of the existing gym will be partially used and windows will be cut in the upper gym walls to allow natural light to flood portions of the area. The new space will increase the overall library space by 40 to 60 percent,” Blum said during a previous meeting.

Finishing the classrooms on the second floor will be bid as an alternate to the project and completed if funds allow, the committee decided.

Roughly $50,000 was added to the project by replacing load-bearing walls with steel columns every 12.5 feet, based on the locations of pilings underground, Blum said.

The school will lose some classroom space to accommodate the new additions, the committee was told.

Also during Tuesday’s meeting, the committee:

—Received an update on Phase 1 of the Morgan City High School field house renovations. To date, $41,927 has been spent. The remaining $8,000 allocated in the previous fiscal year will be rolled over to the coming year.

—Approved $25,000 for an air conditioning system in the new budget for the field house at the high school. The spending of the remaining $8,000 will be decided between the school’s athletic director and principal.

—Approved a $4,874 expenditure to repair the sound system in the Morgan City High Multi-Purpose building.
