Morgan City drug bust nets guilty plea

FRANKLIN, La. — A Morgan City woman pleaded guilty in district court to a single count of cocaine distribution while the man described by police as her boyfriend will go to trial Sept. 9 facing six counts of distribution of a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance.

Anna Eleni Reed, 20, and Kentrell Anthony Davis, 28, also of Morgan City, were charged with drug distribution by Morgan City police on Oct. 31, 2011, after a weeks-long undercover operation.

Reed had two of her three charges for distribution of a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance dropped when she pleaded guilty before District Judge Edward M. Leonard Jr. in the 16th Judicial District Court in Franklin on June 24.

The new case filings describe an undercover operation during which Morgan City police said they recorded or observed multiple cocaine transactions with the pair. Morgan City detectives were assisted by an undercover agent from the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division in the case against Reed. Three undercover meetings involving drug purchases related to her case are described in the filings.

Reed’s first encounter occurred on Aug. 3, 2011, with Davis the focus of the undercover buy. The agent contacted Davis by cell phone and arranged the purchase of $50 of crack cocaine, according to an arrest affidavit.

Davis told the agent to meet him for the drug transaction at Ganaway’s Grocery in Morgan City, according to the affidavit.

Morgan City police investigators filmed the meeting as the agent slid into the rear seat of Davis’ vehicle with Reed sitting in the front passenger seat and introducing herself, according to the affidavit. The agent purchased a rock of cocaine from Davis using marked money, police said.

The second drug charge against Reed, described in the filings, alleges she answered the cell phone when the agent tried to contact Davis on Sept. 23, 2011, and told him that Davis was in jail but “she was still conducting business and that she could take care of him.”

Reed asked to be picked up at her mother’s Bayou Vista home and brought back to her Morgan City residence on Third Street, according to the arrest affidavit. Police accuse Reed of retrieving $40 worth of crack from a drawer in the kitchen and selling it to the agent.

The final count in the original charges filed against Reed accuses her of taking a $40 order of cocaine from the undercover agent during a call the agent placed to the same cell number. The agent met her at the Ganaway’s down the street from her house and purchased crack cocaine with marked money, according to the arrest affidavit.

Reed will return to district court for sentencing on Oct. 18. Assistant District Attorney Anthony Saleme said that a single count of schedule II drug distribution carries a sentence range of two years to 30 years.

In an unrelated case, Brandon Allen, 28, of Jeanerette, pleaded guilty to a charge of cocaine possession in district court last week. He had been stopped on Oct. 16, 2012, by agents of the St. Mary Sheriff’s Narcotics Division who accused him of running a stop sign. He admitted that a bag of cocaine, which fell from his pants as detectives were checking him, belonged to him, according to the arrest affidavit.

Allen’s sentence was deferred and his case was referred to the Iberia Parish Drug Court Program. If he is accepted into the program, he must complete its requirements. If he is not accepted, he must return to court for sentencing.

Allen had a seven-year sentence for possession with intent to distribute marijuana suspended in 2010. He was placed under supervised probation for five years.

Saleme said drug court programs are not easy but those that agree to go through them are often able to get the help they need to overcome addictions.

“These programs are not 100 percent, but evidence shows that they work” and contribute to lower recidivism rates, Saleme said.
