Morgan City defeats Berwick this weekend
Morgan City went across the Atchafalaya River for a matchup with neighboring Berwick and came back home with a four-set victory.
The Lady Tigers (10-6) won the match, 25-15, 21-25, 25-13, 25-12.
While statistics for the Lady Tigers were unavailable as of press time, Elizabeth Hover led the Lady Panthers (4-9) with nine kills, five assists, an ace, and two digs and blocks apiece. Other BHS contributors included Rebecca Richard, 14 assists, an ace and three digs; Abigail Ohlin, six kills and an ace; Abigail Askew, three kills, a dig and four blocks; and Celeste Bowers, eight digs.
The match was the second of the day for Berwick as the Lady Panthers fell to H.L. Bourgeois, also in four games (19-25, 28-26, 22-25, 11-25), Saturday at home.
Hover once again led Berwick, this time with a double-double with 10 kills and 11 assists, as well as two aces, four digs and three blocks. Other Berwick contributors included Ohlin, two kills, an assist, four aces and 19 digs; Richard, 12 assists, two aces and four digs; Askew, three kills and eight blocks; Diana Grace Guarisco, 10 digs; Elle Arcemont, five kills and two digs; and Maddie Gray, three kills and six digs.
The Lady Panthers will return to action today when they host Catholic High-New Iberia. Junior varsity action will begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by varsity play at 5:30 p.m.
Prior to Saturday’s matchup, during Morgan City’s last outing, the squad picked up a 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-19, 15-13) victory against Hahnville High on the road Thursday.
In the victory, Jaiveianna Jones led the Lady Tigers with five aces, 11 kills, nine digs, three blocks, two block assists and one assist. Other Lady Tigers contributing included Katelyn Adams, five kills, 22 assists, nine digs and a block assist; Kloé Liner, 24 digs and three kills and assists apiece; Brandi Ingram, six kills, 14 digs and one assist; Marilynn Bailey, 10 digs, two kills and one block assist and ace apiece; and Savannah Loupe, an assist and an ace apiece and 13 digs.
In junior varsity action, Morgan City fell 15-25, 24-26.
Ingram led the Lady Tigers with 10 digs and five kills, while Layne Reynaud added seven assists and two aces and digs apiece. Others making the stat sheet for Morgan City included LeeAnne Price, eight digs and an assist; May Grogan, three kills and a dig, a block and a block assist apiece; Taylor Prince, three kills, four assists and two digs; Tyler Hebert, three kills; an assist and two digs and aces apiece; and Cecily Feliciano, an ace and block assist apiece and four digs.
In freshman action, the Lady Tigers fell 15-25, 18-25.
Alexandra Thompson led the squad with two kills and a dig and an ace apiece.
The Lady Tigers will return to action Tuesday when they open Division II, District 6 play with a home match against South Terrebonne. Junior varsity play will start at 4 p.m., followed by varsity play at 5 p.m.
Central Catholic defeats Breaux Bridge
Central Catholic on Thursday defeated Breaux Bridge, the top-ranked team in Division II (Class 4A), according to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s latest unofficial power rankings released last week.
The Lady Eagles (10-7) won 3-0 (25-18, 27-25, 25-23).
Several Lady Eagles recorded dominant performances as Meo Knight recorded her second consecutive double-double with 17 kills and 10 digs, while Brie Hill had a team high six blocks along with 12 kills. Caroline Byrne recorded a season high 36 assists and Abbie Bergeron, a season high 17 digs.
Knight added an assist and solo block apiece as well as two block assists in the win, while Hill also recorded two digs. Byrne added an ace and two digs.
Other CCHS contributors included Celine Flores, five kills, three aces and 12 digs and Gee Garrett, five kills and two solo blocks.
CCHS will return to action Wednesday when it travels to face defending Division IV (Class 2A) state champion Notre Dame. Action will start with freshmen play at 4 p.m. followed by junior varsity and varsity action.
