More than 200 members attend St. Mary AARP meeting
More than 200 St. Mary AARP members attended the April 1 meeting at the St. Mary Senior Citizens Center in Morgan City. Teche Federal Bank sponsored the meal of beef stew with rice, bread and green salad that was prepared by the AARP cooking crew of Pat Fryer, Mac McNemar and Linda Darce. Birthday/anniversary cake was provided by M C Bank. Punch was also served.
St. Mary AARP President Paul Vella opened the meeting. Treasurer Ann Lombardo provided the opening and prayer. She recognized the two members that passed away in March.
Member Gordon Smith sang the national anthem and Lombardo led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Teche Federal’s Aaron Ortego addressed the membership.
Guest speaker Glenda Anthony, area director of Fresenius Medical Services, and her assistants Brenda Walker Williams, Denise Champagne and Teresa Gaudet gave a presentation on kidney failure. They also presented a giant “Thank You” umbrella to Vella and his wife, Marie.
St. Mary Parish President Paul Naquin presented a key to the parish to St. Mary AARP Mardi Gras King and Queen Donald and Shirley Akers.
Entertainment was by Lou’s Line Dancing.
Vella urged members to attend the April 21 dance at the center featuring Hiway 315.
He talked on the upcoming trips: a Mystery Trip on May 9, a New York trip in June, Atlanta in October and Branson in December. There are openings on all tours. For information call 985-384-2277.
The next St. Mary AARP meeting will be May 5. The meal will be provided by Klutts Jewelers. Klutts owner, Len Klutts, will be the speaker.
